Rattan Furniture by Staff Writer

I have found that when it comes to rattan furniture, there is often some confusion as to how it differs from wicker. As an aficionado of both wicker and rattan furniture, I would like to take this opportunity to explain how rattan furniture differs from wicker. Hopefully after reading the following paragraphs, you will have a better appreciation of rattan furniture, and will easily be able to distinguish it from wicker pieces.

The Difference Between Wicker and Rattan Furniture
The most obvious difference between wicker and rattan furniture pieces is in their design, rather than the materials from which those designs are made. Rattan furniture is constructed through the fusion of multiple rattan poles; while wicker furniture is created through a series of woven patterns. While rattan furniture has a smooth and almost seamless exterior, wicker furniture has a basket type appearance.

Often confused with bamboo (rattan is solid; bamboo is hollow), rattan is a type of vine found in the stem of climbing palm trees. Rattan is extremely versatile and can be molded to form just about any shape. It is this flexibility that makes rattan furniture so idiosyncratic. Since few other types of wood can be twisted and wrought to the extent that rattan can, rattan furniture allows for distinctive design possibilities that include elegant curvatures and unique shaping.

The reason that I like rattan furniture is because of its amazing durability. Whether purchased as a set or as a piece by itself, rattan furniture will not only add style and grace to any room in the house, but will be around for generations to come!
